How to Build a Good PR Campaign Around Your Film or Project

How can you be on a magazine cover or interviewed by the hottest podcast?

Simple, it’s called PR.

You have never been in charge of PR or communications for your films, but because of your budget, role in the movie, or desire to learn, it is time for you to take care of PR and comms.

You might think the only way to get into the media is to hire a PR agency, but what if I tell you you can learn and do it yourself? This is possible if you have the right strategy and patience to contact journalists.

I promise your time will be well invested.

Another advantage of taking care of PR yourself is that you will have direct access to journalists and the media. You won’t have to worry anymore about whether the PR agency really did its job, and you will receive the published articles directly in your inbox.

Stop thinking about it. It would be nice to appear in [Insert magazine], be interviewed by this podcast, or be mentioned in the TV news or that film show that talks about the most incredible movies every Friday.

You can make it happen, and today, in this post, I will tell you how you can be TV famous and get media traction for your film, project, or whatever you are doing.

First step.

Start a PR strategy. This is a document where you write your ideas with media, the kind of media you want to reach, and what you want from each media outlet.

Second step.

Build a database. If you are new to PR, you need to know that it works around databases, Excel, and sending thousands of emails per week. So, starting a database in Excel is a good start.

Third step.

Start reaching out. PR is all about follow-up. Journalists receive many emails in one day, especially if it’s trendy or they work for an important media outlet. The magic is in the follow-up. When I worked in PR, I sent emails, called them, and confirmed with them several times, you know, just to make sure.

Fourth step.

Make an exchange. You probably have something interesting to offer, such as tickets to your film, interviews, or a collaboration with a famous actor/director/personality.

Bonus.

Use your connections in the film industry, especially if the talent working with you is famous and has many followers. At this time, followers are very valued by journalists and media outlets.
