How to Write the Synopsis for Your Film

The synopsis is a super important part of the equation when selling a film. This is your prime time to sell it; investors and production companies want to hear about the story, but at the same time, they want something quick to digest.

Normally, filmmakers are ready to share all the information they have about their films with potential investors or buyers when they meet them.

Many times, when I am interested in learning more about a project, I ask for a synopsis, and my DMs or emails get flooded with information I didn’t request.

The lesson here is to stick to what the person asks you for, even when you want to send more information, because what if…

Here, I share with you how the synopsis should look and how many types you should have available.

  1. Logline. This a 2 or 3 phrases describing your film.
  2. A short synopsis is normally the one you can read on websites and movie theaters. Half a page will do.
  3. Long synopsis. This is the one you include in your slide deck, pitch deck, and other official documents.
  4. Bonus: The synopsis needs to be short and concise.

Here is an example.

The Mattson family moved to Tehran, Iran, in 1977, pursuing a life of adventure and new endeavors related to Bill’s exciting new job at Abbot Labs Ian.

Little did they know what would happen during their stay in this country.

Yankee Go Home is a documentary about an American family who lived in Iran when the cusp of the Iranian Islamic Revolution exploded in 1977-1978.

You must be prepared for when investors and money people want information about your film. Have them in advance so when they ask you for something, you don’t need to rush to do it, and you can choose what to send; remember to send only the necessary.

We are looking for collaborators, investors, and sales agents who are ready to take this jewel out and about.
